Frits R. Rosendaal studied medicine in Rotterdam and did his PhD, on haemophilia, at Leiden University. He has been for many years associate editor and editor in chief of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the journal of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).  He founded the European Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and organised its successful meetings in 2016 (The Hague), 2018 (Marseille) and 2019 (Glasgow). He is professor and chairman of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). His research interests are blood coagulation, obesity-related disorders and academic integrity.

Frits has published over 1000 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Central Committee on Human Research of The Netherlands and chairman of the Leiden University Committee on Scientific Integrity. He is an elected fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of The Netherlands (KNAW) and of the German Academy Leopoldina. He has received the highest scientific award of the Netherlands (Spinoza award) and was bestowed an honorary doctorate by the University Descartes, Paris.
