In this keynote address Chris Graf (Research Integrity Director, Springer Nature) gives an overview of the present state of publication ethics and research integrity.
This discussion is one of eleven sessions hosted by COPE during Publication Integrity Week 2023.
Keynote address: Publication misconduct and fraud day
Those working in scholarly publications currently face many ‘mountains’ or difficulties: from growing numbers of submissions (and retractions), fake papers, artificial intelligence, paper mills, and sustainable development goals. However, Chris is optimistic about the possibilities when the community works together, as demonstrated by the 2023 United2Act summit on paper mills and its forthcoming action plan, and the tools being developed by the STM Association’s Integrity Hub. We share the challenges but in our teams and networks, we also share the solutions, which must be made available across the scholarly publishing ecosystem.
The concluding address identifies ways to encourage more people to act in an ethical way, for example, by working more closely with universities and research institutes, and rethinking categories of retractions to note when they are instigated by the author.
Dan Kulp, COPE Chair, then moderates the discussion as it opens to audience questions.
